Our ANZA-IJSL Young Lions, both the U-16s and U-18s, displayed the colours proudly in the 2009 edition of the FAS COE Challenge Cup.
After a shakey 1-7 start against a very strong Home United 11 which finished undefeated at the top of the group, our U-16 Young Lions, under the guidance of Coach Peter Warburton, followed up with a 2-1 win over Geylang United’s U-16 squad. They then finished off the group stage with a gutsy 0-3 loss to a very classy SAFFC U-16 team. As our target was just to get first-time experience, so a third place finish in the U-16 “Group Of Death” is admirable, indeed! Congratulations to our U-16s.
Meanwhile, in the most difficult of the U-18 groupings, our older Young Lions showed the world they are no pushovers. Losing a key player in their opening 0-2 loss to SAFFC, they showed character by bouncing back and coming oh-so-close to squeaking out an upset against another Singapore powerhouse by drawing 3-3 against Tampines Rovers. Going down 1-0 to Geylang United destined the team to the cellar of the group, but with a very respectable record in what was, again, termed a “Group of Death”.
With the experience gained against teams of Asia regional stature, our senior Select Teams are well on their way in their preparations for the ultimate target – the 2010 SEA Cup tournament on 27/28 February in Singapore.
In the meantime, while more outside experiences are sought, the U-16s can be seen performing in the Liga ISA at Turf City on alternate Sundays, and the U-18s can be supported in ESPzen League, Sunday Division 4, with the fixture schedule on
